A tattoo is only as good as the heal. The best artists in the world can't save a tattoo that's been badly looked after. Get the aftercare right and your work will look vivid and sharp for years. Get it wrong and you risk patchy colour, blown-out lines, and potential infection.

This is the aftercare protocol we give every client at TattLabStudios. Follow it and your tattoo will heal exactly as intended.

The Healing Timeline

Day 1 — The First 24 Hours

Your artist will cover the fresh tattoo with a wrap or bandage. Leave it on for the time they specify (typically 2–4 hours for cling film, up to 24 hours for second-skin/Saniderm). When you remove it, gently wash the area with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap. Pat dry with a clean paper towel — never rub. Apply a thin layer of unscented moisturiser.

Days 2–7 — The Weeping Phase

Your tattoo will weep plasma and excess ink — this is normal. Wash gently 2–3 times a day and apply a thin layer of aftercare cream (Hustle Butter, Bepanthen, or unscented lotion) after each wash. Keep it moisturised but not smothered. You'll notice some swelling and redness — this should reduce by day 3–4.

Days 7–14 — The Peeling Phase

The surface will start to peel — similar to sunburn. Do not pick or scratch. Let it peel naturally. Continue moisturising. The tattoo may look dull or faded at this stage — this is completely normal and temporary.

Days 14–30 — The Settling Phase

The surface skin has healed but deeper layers are still settling. Keep moisturising and avoid prolonged sun exposure. By week 4 your tattoo should look close to its final healed appearance.

Month 2–3 — Full Heal

The tattoo is fully healed. Continue using SPF 50 whenever it's exposed to direct sunlight — this is the single most effective thing you can do to preserve your tattoo long-term.

What to Avoid

Signs of a Normal Heal vs. Infection

Normal: Redness and swelling for first 3 days, itching as it heals, peeling skin from days 7–14, milky appearance before final colour settles, slightly raised texture during peeling.

See a doctor if you notice: Excessive swelling that gets worse after day 3, hot skin that doesn't cool down, pus (yellow/green discharge), red streaking spreading from the tattoo, fever, or severe pain beyond the first 48 hours. These can be signs of infection.

Long-Term Care

Once healed, good long-term care is simple:

Aftercare Products We Recommend

Avoid anything with fragrances, alcohol, or retinol. Less is more during healing.
